How to Activate An MIT Kerberos Account

Overview

Your MIT Kerberos account (sometimes called an Athena/MIT/email account) is your online identity at MIT. Once you set up your account, you will be able to access your MIT email, educational technology discounts, your records, printing services, and much more.

When you register for an account on MIT's Athena system, you create your MIT Kerberos identity.

Account Registration

Students

  • Undergrad Students: You will receive an email inviting you to register for your MIT Kerberos account. This email will be sent 152 days before the start of your registered term.
    • If you are an incoming MIT freshman, please visit the MyMIT portal to register for your account.
  • Grad Students: You will receive an email from accounts@mit.edu inviting you to register for your MIT Kerberos account. This email will be sent 9 months before the start of your registered term.

Staff & Faculty

  • Once MIT Human Resources has finished setting up your appointment with MIT, you will receive an email with your MIT ID number. Once you have your MIT ID number, proceed to the Account registration page.
    • If you haven't received your MIT ID number, you will need to reach out to your department Human Resource Officer (HRO) to confirm your appointment.
    • If you've have had issues registering your account, please contact our Service Desk at servicedesk@mit.edu (617-253-1101).

Affiliates & Sponsored Guests

  • Once your Sponsor has completed the guest sponsorship form on sponsored-accounts.mit.edu, if the start date is within 14 days of sponsorship submission, the registrable Kerberos account will be created instantly, and an email will be sent to both the Sponsor and the Sponsored. Otherwise, the account will be created when that 14-day window is reached.
  • If you haven't received your MIT ID number or have had issues registering your account, please contact our Service Desk at servicedesk@mit.edu (617-253-1101).
