Office Plugins and Add-ins

Plugins

Injection-based plugins are independent packages that are installed locally alongside Office products. These are offered as standalone software solutions and do not require a specific mailbox type, Exchange 13 or O365. However, plugins on macOS 12 and on will no longer function, given the security requirements innate to those operating systems.

For macOS 12+: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/outlook-for-mac-planned-update-for-injection-based-plugins-dc6f9490-da7d-4d35-8793-835636b954d5

Add-ins

Microsoft AppSource, the store required to access add-ins, is supported by our Exchange 13 and Office 365 environments in a limited context. Individuals may be able to navigate to AppSource and attempt to get add-ins in their web clients, though they will receive an error after authenticating into owa.mit.edu or office.com. Similar behavior will be experienced if individuals try to get add-ins using Office clients themselves, barring Outlook, where there are certain pre-approved add-ins like Zoom, Calendly, Mendeley Cite, Salesforce, etc.
