Recommended and Required Training Courses
Answer
Recommended:
A recommended course is one that you are encouraged to take because it offers the chance to learn knowledge and skills that fit your role or interests. It is not required. Over time, recommended courses may be added to your My Training page based on your role or the groups to which you belong at MIT.
Required:
A required course is one that you must complete based on regulatory agency requirements or MIT best practices. If a course is required, it typically means that someone is reviewing reports to see who has complied, and that there are consequences if you do not. Requirements are determined based on your work or study activities, your role or job title, and/or the groups or departments to which you belong at MIT. Many requirements are intended to help us protect the environment, health and safety (EHS) of MIT and its neighbors.
Both Required and Recommended:
Occasionally a course will be required for one reason and recommended for another. In that case, you will see the course as required.
Who can make courses required or recommended?
Requirements and recommendations can be made by any of the primary training providers based on MIT's regulatory or compliance needs (Environment, Health and Safety (EHS); Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM); Facilities; Human Resources (HR); Information Systems & Technology (IS&T); Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP); Vice President for Finance (VPF)). There are also some departments who have developed required and recommended profiles for their teams. Although there are only a few of these at this time (Fall 2015), we anticipate that this will be the norm moving forward. In the case of department requirements, the request is typically made by the AO, FO and/or HR rep.
