Q: How do I choose the right image management tool?

  • How do I use images in my class?
  • How do I use pictures for teaching?
  • How do I manage my image collection?

Context

  • Image management tools and services
  • Teaching with technology

Answer

There are a large variety of image tools and services available. Some are operated and even developed at MIT, such as m:media or Visualizing Cultures. Others are general-purpose tools available (for free or fee) on the internet, such as Flickr, Picasa, or Photobucket. There are also outside services MIT has special contracts or subscriptions with, such as ARTstor.

The large number of choices available can be overwhelming in trying to find the right tool to meet your needs. Two resources are available specifically to make this easier for you:

1. Teaching with Technology: Image Services

The Image Services portal on the Teaching with Technology web site tries to collect information about most of the image management and presentation tools used at MIT in teaching and learning activities. It is aimed at instructors and faculty at MIT, but available to anyone.

2. MIT Libraries Finding Images Guide
