Q: How do I check printer information in moira?

Answer

Print queues at MIT have two components: the print queue, and the printer host record.

  • Print queue: This is the name of the printer that you specify to all printing commands. SAP printers will always have a 4-character queue names, others may be longer.
  • Printer host record: Like all network devices, printers must have an IP address and hostname, which is stored in Moira as a host record. Printers receive their IP address and other configuration over the network, via the BOOTP protocol. Printers which have been configured with a print queue (aka "Athena queue") should never have their IP address information entered manually.

For many DLC printers, the print queue and the hostname are the same, however they are not guaranteed to be. Always verify the actual hostname of a printer in Moira.

Print queues

You can look up print queues with the "eunice" command. (Alternatively, you can use the "moira" command and choose "Printer Information" and then "Get Printer Information".)

Example:

joeuser@athena:~$ eunice blta
Printer: blta Duplex queue: [none]
Status: Active (1)
Duplex by Default: no Hold by Default: no

If any information listed here is incorrect (such as the "Contact" or the "Location"), e-mail hesreq@mit.edu and provide them with the information.

Printer host records

Using the "Printer hostname" field from the queue listing (above), you can then run "stella" on that hostname.

In the example below, note that the host record has an alias that matches the printer queue name. However, this is purely for convenience and may not be present in all cases.

joeuser@athena:~$ stella macaddict
Machine: MACADDICT.MIT.EDU
Aliases: BLTA.MIT.EDU
