Q: MKI - Sending as MIT & Space email addresses

  • How can MKI users choose whether to send email from their @mit.edu or @space.mit.edu address?

Answer

  • Some MKI users have a space.mit.edu email alias linked to their mit.edu mailbox
  • This allows them to select which address to use in the From field when composing email
  • The process for enabling and switching addresses depends on the email client used

The ability to switch between multiple email addresses is not available in all mobile email applications

Outlook Web Access (OWA)

By default, messages are sent from user@space.mit.edu. To enable sending from user@mit.edu:

1. Navigate to https://outlook.office.com/mail/
2. Click the gear icon in the upper right corner for Settings
3. Under Mail > Compose and reply, scroll down to “Addresses to send from”
4. Click your @mit.edu to enable it as a send-from option

4. Close the settings window

When composing a new message in Outlook for Web, you should now see a drop down in the From field with both your @space.mit.edu and your @mit.edu addresses as choices.

Outlook for Mac App (MS365 subscription license)

By default, emails will send from user@space.mit.edu

To send from your @mit.edu address:
1. Open Mail > When composing a new message, click the drop-down arrow in the From: field
2. Select Other email address... from the list
3. If you've enabled the setting in Outlook Web App (OWA) as described above, your @mit.edu address may appear automatically

4. If it doesn't appear, manually enter user@mit.edu. Once entered, Outlook may cache it for future use. NOTE: You may need to type your full MIT email address (user@mit.edu), not just your Kerberos ID (user).

Outlook for PC

By default, emails will send from user@space.mit.edu

Follow these steps to send an email from a different address, such as your @mit.edu email:
1. Open Outlook and click New Email to begin composing a message
2. In the new message window: Go to Options tab
3. Click From to show the "From" field if it's not already visible
4. Click the From dropdown in the message header
5. Choose Other Email Address...

6. Type in your @mit.edu email address and click OK

NOTE: Even if you enter your @mit.edu address, Outlook may automatically revert to using your @space.mit.edu adress by default

Apple Mail (macOS)

Mail will send from the email address that was typed when the account was added via > System Settings > Internet Accounts

1. Go to Mail > Settings
2. Click on the Accounts section at the top
3. With your MIT account selected, click the pull-down next to Email Address, and click Edit Email Address

4. Click the plus button to add an account and type your @mit.edu email address

5. Click OK and close Preferences window

You will now see a From field dropdown when composing messages with both addresses listed

NOTE: Apple Mail provides an option to set a default sending address

iOS Native Mail App

  • There is currently no option to select the @mit.edu address

Outlook for iOS App
