Q: Do the new "L" style 85W Magsafe Power Adapter from Apple work with the older Macbook Pro laptops that came with the original "T" style adapters?

Answer

Yes, but with a caveat. Some of the older Macbook Pros may require EITHER:

  1. Removal of the battery AND/OR
  2. a reset of the PMU (Power Management Unit) for the laptop to correctly recognize the adapter. To reset the PMU, shut down the laptop, remove the battery, and hold down the power button for 10 seconds. The new "L" style power adapter and older Macbook Pro should start talking instantly thereafter. Put the battery back in and you should be good to go.
